 ::: Russian
Russian Language
I'm taking a trip to Russia next summer, and could do with a challenge, so am leaning Russian.
Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which looks a bit scary at first!
But actually the hardest part is NOT the scary letters
(Д, Ж, Ф, Ц, Ч, Ш, Щ, Ы, Ю, Я)
because you can just learn these, but the letters that look like English/Latin letters
but that have different sounds (you have to "un-learn" these first, then re-learn a new sound!)
| А а | "Ah" like in
cat |
| Б б | "Buh" like in
butter |
| В в | "Vuh" as in
viking |
| Г г | "Guh" has in
gate |
| Д д | "Duh" as in
dog |
| Е е | "Yeah" as in
yet |
| Ё ё | "Yo" as in
yolk |
| Ж ж | "Zhuh" as in
pleasure, azure, also like Je in French |
| З з | "Zuh" as in
zebra |
| И и | "Eee" as in
egret |
| Й й | "Ih" as in
igloo |
| К к | "Kuh" as in
kill |
| Л л | "Ell" as in letter |
| М м | "Muh" as in mother (n.b.
not "Em") |
| Н н | "Nuh" as in nice (n.b.
not "En") |
| О о | "Oh" as in
Oliver |
| П п | Puh as
in pie (like the Greek letter) |
| Р р | "Rrrrr" as in
rrrrrrrrroll your Rrrrrrr's |
| С с | "Ssuh" as in
snake |
| Т т | "Tuh" as in
take |
| У у | "Oooo" as in
Luton, Boot, |
| Ф ф | "Eff" as in
fridge |
| Х х | "kH",
sometimes the K and the H are both sounded like in Mikhail,
sometimes just the H as in hotel. |
| Ц ц | "Ts" like in
its |
| Ч ч | "Chuh" as in
chips |
| Ш ш | "Shah" as in shut |
| Щ щ | "Schah" as in sheep |
| Ъ ъ | Soft sound,
used to make previous sound softer, turns the L in Olga (Ol-Gah) into more of an
Oil-Gah. |
| Ы ы | "Oi", the hardest sound to make. You
have to stretch your lips out sideways. I can't find an English work that
has this sound! |
| Ь ь | Hardening
sound. |
| Э э | "Eh" as in
echo |
| Ю ю | "Yoo" and un union |
| Я я | "Yah" as in
yak |
Usually О is said as А if
another letter is stressed.
Apparently only "villagers" always say О as О.
For example, the word for female friend is said Padrooga, and not Podrooga, because the
у has the stress:
Подруга
PadrOOga
